Trail 1 Guided Tour

This text-only "guided tour" is a gentle meander through some things in Wotja. It is less structured than the other 'How To' Tutorials and is not meant to be all encompassing. However, it may be of interest or use to those who generally prefer text instruction to video.

    6. You'll hear the Synth sounds for each Cell passed through the same Mix-level FX.
  5. Generators
    1. Play with Generator Types
      1. Create a new empty Mix.
      2. Open it (which loads it into the main Mix mode view).

      4. Tap top-left Cell in the top row, browse for Templates Pak > '25 Generator Types' > 'Ambient'.
      5. You now have a single Cell, populated with a single Ambient Generator - which is a generator that plays long notes, and is often used for drones.
      6. Add a new Generator: in the Generator Network view double-tap (or right-click) your 'Ambient' Generator *OR* tap the Generator Menu button (this is above your Ambient Generator).
      7. In the pop-up menu select "Add Generator of Type..." and select Rhythmic; this plays notes much more often.
      8. You now have two Generators playing in your Cell; one is of type Ambient and one is of type Rhythmic.
    2. Set the sounds to be used by your Generator
      1. Use what you created in 5a.
      2. You'll see that your Ambient Generator is attached to MIDI Channel 1.
      3. Tap the Generator Synth button to the right of MIDI Channel 1.
      4. This shows as 'MIDI 1 Synth' in the Synth & FX Editor, where you can edit the sounds used for your Ambient Generator.
      5. Tap the Presets button, make a selection and then press OK...
      6. You'll see that your Rhythmic generator is attached to MIDI Channel 2.
      7. Tap the Generator Synth button to the right of MIDI Channel 2.
      8. This shows as 'MIDI 2 Synth' in the Synth & FX Editor, where you can edit the sounds used for your Rhythmic generator.
      9. Tap the Presets button, make a selection and then press OK...
  6. Follower Generators
This tutorial will create a network of Generators that respond to each other, and configure their sounds.
    1. Add a Generator
      1. As above, create a new empty mix and open it.
      2. Make sure it is playing!
      3. Tap top-left Cell in the top row, browse for Templates Pak > '25 Generator Types' > 'Ambient'.
      4. You now have a single Cell, populated with a single Ambient Generator - which is a generator that plays long notes, and is often used for drones.
      5. Add a new Generator by *by copying*:
        • Double-tap (or right-click) your 'Ambient' Generator.
        • Select Copy in pop-up menu.
        • Select Paste.
      6. You now have two Generators playing in your Cell; both are of type Ambient.
      7. Tap/hold on your second Ambient Generator button and drag onto your first Generator button.
      8. The second Ambient Generator then becomes a Follower Generator which will compose notes that 'follow' notes composed by your first Generator.
      9. Change the new Generator's name...
        1. Select the Follower Generator.
        2. In the right-hand parameters panel look for the 'Generator' section and then the 'Generator Name' parameter within it.
        3. Select this, and use the 'Rename Generator?' alert to rename it "Follower 1".
    2. Adding some more Generators
      1. Use what you have created in 6a.
      2. Change your Follower Generator to compose notes 50% of the time:
        • Select the Follower Generator.
        • In the right-hand parameters panel look for the 'Follower' section and then the 'Percent' parameter within it.
        • Set the Percent slider to 50%.
        • Your Follower Generator will now play a note 50% of the time that your Ambient Generator composes notes.
      3. Copy and paste your Follower Generator, creating your third Generator.
      4. Configure it to follow the second Generator (which is your first Follower), by dragging from the third Generator button to the second Generator button.
      5. Create a fourth Follower by copying the third Generator, and configuring it to follow the third generator by dragging from the fourth Generator button to the third Generator button.
      6. You now have: one Ambient Generator, followed by a Follower, which is followed by another Follower, which is followed by one more Follower; the net result is a Mix that generates chords; sometimes the chords are thicker than others.
      7. Finally, set-up the sounds for all Generators: each of your generators has been connected to a different MIDI Channnel.
    3. For every Generator's MIDI channel set the sounds to be used
      1. Tap the Generator Synth button to the right of each of the four MIDI Channels.
      2. In the Synth & FX Editor for each one edit the sounds used for Generator's MIDI Channel (or use the Presets button to select a Preset) and then press OK.
  7. Listening Generators - Micro-tutorial
    1. Getting Started
      1. Open Settings > MIDI Input, and make sure you’ve enabled a MIDI channel that you know will receive MIDI note on/off events from either a physical keyboard, a MIDI Generator app, or some other source.
      2. Create a new empty mix, and open it.
      3. Make sure it is playing!
      4. Tap top-left Cell in the top row, browse for Templates Pak > '25 Generator Types' > 'Listener'.
      5. You now have a single cell, populated with a single Listening Generator - which is a Generator that can "listen" for incoming MIDI events. By default, this is attached to MIDI Channel 1.
      6. Note: Listener Generators do not generate Notes directly - you need to Follow them, or use the Chording parameter.
    2. Using Chording
      1. Use what you have created in 7a.
      2. In the right-hand parameters panel look for the 'Chording' section and then the 'Depth' parameter within it.
      3. Select the Depth to 4.
      4. Now, every time your Listener Generator detects a note on event, it automatically generates a chord from it!
      5. To change the sound, tap the Generator Synth button to the right of your Generator.
      6. In the Synth & FX Editor tap the Presets button, make a selection and then press OK...
      7. To change the block chord you’re hearing to an arpeggio simply select the 'Chording' Group in the right-hand parameters panel and set the 'Delay' slider to 5.
      8. Every time your Listener Generator now detects a note on event it will play a strummed chord!
      9. Now try other parameters in the Chording group.
    3. Attach a Follower Generator
      1. Use what you have created in 7a.
      2. Double tap the Listener Generator, and in the pop-up menu select "Add Generator of Type..." and select Follower.
      3. Tap/hold on tha added Follower Generator button and drag onto the Listener Generator button.
      4. When your Listener Generator detects incoming MIDI note on/off events (on MIDI channel 1) the Follower Generator will respond by playing notes in direct response.
      5. The Follower Generator will to harmonize with the Followed note.
      6. You can now see/hear what happens when you play with the parameters for a Follower Generator.
